How to make my perfect construction-themed number 4 birthday cake recipe: answers to your FAQ

For this recipe, I’ve put together a series of (very good) frequently asked questions to ensure your cake turns out perfectly. (No midnight cake emergency here!)

Do my eggs and butter need to be at room temperature for cooking?

Ideally yes, as they will mix more easily and improve the texture of the cake. If yours came straight from the fridge, don’t worry. Place the eggs in the warm (not hot) water for a few minutes. Use a grater to grate the butter onto a plate and let sit for a few minutes. Everything will be at room temperature in no time.

What is the best way to cut out pieces of cake using templates?

Trim and level the top of the cake with a large serrated knife, if necessary, so that the template can sit flat on top. Secure the template with toothpicks. A serrated knife is also essential for cutting the pieces. Push the knife directly into the cake (do not use a sawing motion). Wipe the knife with a damp cloth after each cut and take your time to ensure precision. Don’t throw away cake scraps! Make them into cake pops, truffles, snack on them or freeze them to use later.

What is a crumb coat?

This is a thin layer of icing spread over the cake to catch any loose crumbs. It also prevents crumbs from passing through the final layer of icing, filling gaps and creating a surface to which the pipes will stick more easily. Put the cake in the refrigerator after applying the crumb coat so that it sets. That perfect finish is in sight!

How to line a cake pan?

For a round mold, place parchment paper flat on your work surface. Lay the mold on its side along one edge of the paper and measure approximately 2 cm above the height of the mold. Mark with a pencil, then use a ruler to cut the paper at the mark to create a long strip. Place the mold flat on another sheet of baking paper and trace the outline of the bottom. Cut out the circle. Butter the mold, then place the circle, marked side down, in the mold. Place the strip of paper along the side of the pan, overlapping it at the seam.

For a square or rectangle mold, trace the bottom of the mold on a sheet of baking paper using a pencil, then cut out. Place the mold on its side (longer side, if rectangular) along one edge of another sheet of baking paper and measure 2cm above the height of the mold. Cut the paper at the mark to create a long strip. Repeat 2 to 3 times to create enough strips to cover all sides. Butter the pan, then place the strips along the sides of the pan, overlapping at the seams. Place the base paper, marked side down, last.

💡Tip: How to present your number cake
A masonite cake board is the sturdiest choice, especially if you’re baking a large cake. Anything less sturdy can cause cracks around the base of the finished cake if it is not strong enough to support the weight of the cake. You can also use a serving plate large enough to hold your cake.

Practical supplies that make baking your perfect birthday cake easy

These tools are not essential, but will help you achieve your cake goals! Cake decorating supplies are available at major retailers, specialty cake decorating stores, or online.

  • Palette knife: This versatile tool helps you distribute your frosting evenly.
  • Cake scraper: a scraper can help you get a perfectly smooth layer of icing.
  • Cake turntable: Being able to turn your cake over makes it easier to ice. Some people use the turntable in their microwave to make ice cream cakes.
  • Piping bag: you can use this with different shaped nozzles, including star, leaf and grass tips.
  • Gel food coloring: we recommend using gel food coloring rather than liquid food coloring. The gel is much more concentrated than the liquid, so grab it when you’re looking for vibrant color or need to color a large amount of icing. You also won’t add too much extra liquid to the frosting, which could affect the consistency.
  • White food coloring: For some cakes, you will notice that the icing is bright white. This isn’t essential – if you leave it raw it will just have a slight yellow tint. But if you want to get that white color, use a white gel color. Or try a little purple food coloring to neutralize the yellow tint, adding gradually with the tip of a toothpick until you achieve the desired shade. Just be careful not to add too much or your frosting may turn purple-gray!
  • Baking dish: The pan we used, also called a party pan, is available in supermarkets.
